چکیده

We report the first likely detections of erupting Dwarf Novae (DN) in an external galaxy: the Large Magellanic Cloud. Six candidates were isolated from approximately a million stars observed every second night over 11 nights with the CTIO 8K × 8K Mosaic2 CCD imager. Artificial dwarf nova and completeness tests suggest that we are seeing only the brightest of the LMC DN, probably SS Cygni-like CVs, but possibly SU UMa-type cataclysmics undergoing superoutbursts. We derive crude but useful limits on the LMC DN surface density, and on the number of DN in the LMC. Many thousands of cataclysmic variables in the Magellanic Clouds can be discovered and characterized with 8 meter class telescopes. Erupting Cataclysmic Variable Stars in the Nearest Globular Cluster , NGC 6397 : Intermediate Polars ?

NGC 6397 is the closest globular cluster, and hence the ideal place to search for faint stellar populations such as cataclysmic variables (CVs). HST and Chandra observers have identified nine certain and likely CVs in this nearby cluster, including several magnetic CV candidates. We have combined our recent UV imagery with archival HST images of NGC 6397 to search for new CV candidates and espe...

The MACHO Project has catalogued ∼ 8000 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, ∼ 1800 in the Galactic bulge, and ∼ 50 in the Sgr dwarf galaxy. These variables are excellent distance indicators, and are used as tools to study the structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the bulge. The large datasets also probe uncommon pulsation modes. A number of double-mode RR Lyrae stars (RRd) are f...

The Local Stellar Population of Novae Regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud

The distribution of novae across the face of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is presented. The star formation history of nearby regions around them is also studied using photometric data of stars and star clusters in the OGLE II survey and star cluster catalogues. The nova population in the LMC belong, predominantly, to the fast category, with only 11.8% belonging to the slow nova population. ...

Old White Dwarfs as a Microlensing Population

A popular interpretation of recent microlensing studies of the line of sight towards the Large Magellanic Cloud invokes a population of old white dwarf stars in the Galactic halo. Below I review the basic properties of old white dwarf stars and the ongoing efforts to detect this population directly.
